Ed Sheeran improvised a game of ‘hide the banana’ (get your minds out of the gutter, you lot!), Justin Bieber cleaned up and once again, the web went weak at the knees for Ruby Rose – find out all that happened at this year’s EMAs in Milan
Ed Sheeran and Ruby Rose hosted…
…and they did a great job! Though our laid-back, tatted-up hosts aren’t ones you’d usually associate with making big presentations like the EMAs, they kept a firm hand on events, had a good time and gave us some lol-worthy crossover skits – including one where they acted like a bickering married couple. But with all the ready-made viral moments that we’re used to from an awards ceremony (ahem, “Miley, what’s good?”), was their laid-back hosting style a little boring? Cheeky Ed decided to poke fun at the drama-free vibes by injecting some himself – with a little game of “Hide The Banana”. Always the gentleman, he obliged when Ruby Rose asked him to go first – and he decided to throw the fruit behind him into the crowd! Not quite the controversy we were expecting…
Bieber won big
The Canadian heart-throb has been on a quest to shake off his bad boy image in recent months – and it looks like it’s working, as he ended up being the big winner of the night, taking home an incredible FIVE awards! Along with Best Male, Best North American Act, Best Collaboration and Biggest Fans, the Biebs also took home an award for Best Look, to which he responded: “I got these looks from my mama.” Aww!
Roses are Red, violets are blue, the internet loves Ruby and we do too! Since she was announced as a cast member of Orange Is The New Black, the Australian actress and DJ has been getting love online for her edgy style and her fluid approach to gender. At one point, she addressed the audience as ‘Ladies, gentlemen and everyone in between’ – smoothly addressing the fact that some people, like herself, don’t feel attached to one particular gender. Good on you, Ruby!
Macklemore’s back – but what about Taylor Swift?
In a surprise moment of the night, funky duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won Best Video for their song Downtown. To be fair, it’s a cracking video, but judging by previous awards ceremonies, a certain Miss Swift was widely expected to pick up the gong. But never fear, Swifties – Bad Blood still scooped Taylor the Best Song award. But, along with the likes of One Direction, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and 5SOS, she didn’t turn up to collect it!
