The 'Call Me Caitlyn' costume is described as 'humorous' on the websites where it's for sale, but Twitter users didn't see it that way
Remember when Caitlyn Jenner appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair looking all kinds of amazing and the outpouring of support and admiration made the world seem like a really happy, love-filled place for a few minutes?
Of course you do. The cover – which will probably go down as one of the most memorable ever – was a landmark, particularly for the transgender community who, in Caitlyn, had found a new superstar to blaze a trail for them, breaking down barriers and misconceptions one perfectly-heeled step at a time.
Well, two months on and someone’s decided to reduce that momentous moment to a cheap LOL – by producing a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume.
The ‘Call Me Caitlyn’ costume – classified as a ‘humorous’ men’s outfit – is currently for sale on two American websites, Wholesale Halloween Costumes and Anytime Costumes, with the latter promising that the costume will ‘get you a few laughs’ this Halloween.
It consists of a pair of white shorts and a matching padded, strapless top – mimicking the outfit Caitlyn wore on the Vanity Fair cover – along with a wig and a ‘Call Me Caitlyn’ sash.
In the description on Anytime Costumes, it says the outfit lets you ‘dress as the softer side of the popular Olympian’.
It adds: ‘You probably won’t break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did when she first made her account, but you’ll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together.’
However, the costume hasn’t ‘got a few laughs’ out of people on social media, with Twitter users reacting angrily to news of its existence.
One wrote: ‘The fact there is a Caitlyn Jenner halloween costume absolutely repulses me.’
Another simply wrote: ‘Trans lives are not punchlines.’
In the face of the backlash, a representative from Spirit Halloween, the company that manufactured the costume, told NY Daily News that it was supposed to celebrate Caityn Jenner.
She said: ‘Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year. Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.’
Another costume from the same company, the ‘Call Me Caitlyn Mr. Olympian Costume Kit’ that appeared to mimick the outfit worn by Caitlyn – then still known as Bruce – when she won gold at the 1976 Summer Olympics was available from BuyCostumes.com but has now been discontinued.
