The mega-star suffered from post-natal depression
Friendly, bubbly, and one of the most successful musicians of all time – to many, Adele seems like an unstoppable force.
But the global superstar from Tottenham, north London has never been afraid to show a lot of vulnerability – and has now revealed that she’s battled depression since a young age, and suffered from post-natal depression after the birth of her son Angelo.
In a new chat with Vanity Fair, Adele speaks very frankly about her struggles after becoming a mother in October 2012, expressing that despite her intense love for her child, she had an unshakeable feeling of inadequacy.
‘My knowledge of postpartum – or post-natal, as we call it in England – is that you don’t want to be with your child; you’re worried you might hurt your child; you’re worried you weren’t doing a good job,’ she told the US magazine.
‘But I was obsessed with my child. I felt very inadequate; I felt like I’d made the worst decision of my life… It can come in many different forms.’
Though she didn’t take antidepressants, she managed to get herself back on track by taking time for herself:
‘Eventually I just said, I’m going to give myself an afternoon a week, just to do whatever the f*ck I want without my baby. A friend of mine said, ‘Really? Don’t you feel bad?’ I said, “I do, but not as bad as I’d feel if I didn’t do it”.’
Elsewhere in the illuminating discussion, 28-year-old Adele reveals that she had her first experiences with depression and struggling with mental health at the young age of 10, following the death of her grandfather.
‘I have a very dark side. I’m very available to depression.
‘I can slip in and out of it quite easily. It started when my granddad died, when I was about 10, and while I never had a suicidal thought, I have been in therapy, lots.’
And when asked whether she’d be having a younger brother or sister for Angelo, she admitted that her previous experience while being a new mum makes her hesitate: ‘I’m too scared. I had really bad [post-natal] depression after I had my son, and it frightened me.’
However, she said that partner Simon Konecki‘s daughter from a previous relationship was her ‘get-out-of-jail-free-card’.
