Carol McGiffin reveals her battle with confidence after undergoing a mastectomy

Former Loose Women panellist Carol McGiffin has opened up about her heartbreaking struggle with breast cancer after being diagnosed with the illness last April.

The usually confident and outspoken journalist has revealed how losing her hair after six rounds of chemotherapy and undergoing a mastectomy left her feeling lower than ever.

‘I’ve always really liked myself but cancer took away my self-esteem and for the first time in my whole adult life I didn’t feel sexy,’ Carol says.

Carol, 54, bravely confessed that she struggled to believe fiancé Mark Cassidy, 33, when he told her he still fancied her after having one of her breasts removed last year.

‘Mark constantly told me it didn’t matter, I was still me but it didn’t really sink in,’ she says. ‘He also made sure I knew how much he loved me and that he still fancied me. But deep down I didn’t believe him.’

The star also reveals that she plans to have the breast rebuilt in the future: ‘Initially I wasn’t going to bother. I don’t NEED two boobs, I can live without one but I need to feel normal and right now I don’t. I still feel shocked when I look in the mirror,’ she said.

Carol was diagnosed with an aggressive, grade 3, triple negative tumour but decided to keep her illness a secret from many including some of her family and friends, confessing she didn’t think she could cope with the sympathy.

Thankfully after the chemotherapy and 15 rounds of radiotherapy Carol is hopeful that the cancer is gone for good.

‘Fingers crossed, the treatments have seen off the cancer,’ she says. ‘But I can’t know. I just have to keep an eye on things and hope. If five years go by and it doesn’t, I get the all clear. Until then I’m going to get on with my life. And I’m going to enjoy every minute of it, just like I always have. But more.’
