Stephen passed away yesterday morning

Caroline Flack and Simon Cowell are among the celebrities who’ve paid tribute to cancer sufferer Stephen Sutton after his death at the age of 19.

Stephen‘s mother Jane announced that he’d lost his battle against bowel cancer with a poignant Facebook message yesterday, four years after he was diagnosed aged 15.

‘My heart is bursting with pride but breaking with pain for my courageous, selfless, inspirational son who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning,’ read the post.

‘We all know he will never be forgotten, his spirit will live on, in all that he achieved and shared with so many.’

The sad news comes after Stephen raised over £3 million for Teenage Cancer Trust via his JustGiving page, an amount which smashed the site’s record and is still rising.

Stars including Jason Manford, Benedict Cumberbatch, Simon Pegg, Chris O’Dowd, Jack Whitehall, David Tennant and Coldplay had all supported his fundraising campaign.

Stephen‘s been labelled an ‘inspiration’ after bravely saying that: ‘Life isn’t measured in time, it’s measured in achievements’ and that his ‘core purpose’ was to help others.

‘Very sad about Stephen Sutton. A true hero x,’ Tweeted Caroline, 34.

Simon wrote: ‘So very sad to hear that Stephen Sutton has passed away. He was a very brave person and an inspiration to millions. Rest in peace.’

Ricky Gervais commented: ‘RIP Stephen Sutton. A true hero & inspiration to us all. #stephensstory.’

Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlpine said: ‘Such sad news about Stephen Sutton. Rest in Peace. What a son to be proud of.’
