The actor stopped drinking water to play Jack Salmon in The Lovely Bones
Ryan Gosling came up with a unique way to pile on weight when he was cast in the film adaptation of The Lovely Bones.
The Canadian actor swapped traditional drinks for melted ice cream – and hated every second.
‘I think the hardest thing I did was gain 50lb in a few months. Just in my own world, that was pretty awful,’ Ryan tells ShortList.
‘I stopped drinking water and instead melted pints of Häagen-Dazs and drank that when I was thirsty.’
Ryan, 32, also grew a beard to play Jack Salmon in the 2009 film, whose 14-year-old daughter Susie is murdered by her neighbour.
But he ended up dropping out of the flick because director Peter Jackson felt he’d become too fat and was replaced by Mark Wahlberg.
‘I was 150 pounds when he hired me, and I showed up on set 210 pounds,’ Ryan told the Hollywood Reporter in 2010.
‘I just showed up on set and I’d gotten it wrong… It didn’t ever become about the weight because the weight was just indicative of a deeper misunderstanding about the character.’
