The former Beatle isn't sure about 1D's new label

One Direction have been dubbed the next Beatles because of their hugely successful US promo tour – but Sir Paul McCartney doesn’t think this is a good thing.

Beatle legend Paul says 1D aren’t the first line-up to be compared with the group he started with John Lennon in 1960 and reckons the public will expect too much from our boys.

‘There are so many bands who all get called “the next Beatles“,’ says Sir Paul, 69.

‘Suddenly it puts an awful lot of pressure on them to be the next Beatles.

Oasis were “the next Beatles” once if you remember.

‘It’s a pressure, because suddenly you’ve got to live up to all the things that we did, and it was a different time.

‘So let’s just call them “the next terrific band”.’

Louis Tomlinson, 20, Zayn Malik, 19, plus Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, all 18, made chart history when they hit the top spot in the US Billboard 200 chart with their album Up All Night.

The boys are the first ever British group to go straight to No 1 in the States with their debut album – something even the popular Beatles failed to do.

‘They’re doing well in America,’ Sir Paul tells ITV1’s Daybreak.

‘It’s good – good luck lads.’
