Actor Liam Bairstow will join the Street as the nephew of Roy Cropper's girlfriend
Coronation Street will soon be welcoming a new member, and they’re also making history in the process.
The latest actor to join the soap is Liam Bairstow, and he’s also Corrie’s first ever actor with Down’s Syndrome. Liam got the part through Breaking Through Talent – a workshop held by ITV for people with disabilities.
The news was announced on Twitter with the #CorriePressDay hashtag. All day yesterday, the show’s Twitter account was busily revealing new characters and plot lines, and the news of Liam’s part in the show was warmly received.
Liam’s former school, Shipley College, tweeted that they were ‘so proud’ of their former student, while other fans praised Corrie for bringing ‘more diversity’ to the soap.
But the show’s producer Stuart Blackburn was keen to stress that Liam’s inclusion was based solely on his acting talent, and not just to make the show appeal ‘politically correct’. On the ITV website, he’s quoted as saying: ‘He’s going to be coming in as Cathy’s nephew. It’s not some politically correct thing. We actually found there a really great actor with a wonderful sense of timing. The cast have been really enjoying working with him.’
Other exciting new developments to the show were revealed under the hashtag, including a saucy love triangle storyline for Mary Taylor – who’s set to have an affair!
We’re excited to see what Liam and fellow Corrie newbie Ted Robbins will get up to on the show, and we’re also giving a big thumbs up to Coronation Street for giving Liam his big break.
Shayne Ward is also joining Coronation Street – watch him talk about it below!
