The former EastEnders actress has had a tough year
Keen to dispel recent rumours about her appearance, Danniella Westbrook has spoken out about recent pictures showing her with bandages on her nose.
Since appearing on Celebrity Big Brother at the beginning of the year, the former EastEnders actress has suffered from health and personal problems, and recently hit headlines after fans feared she’d suffered a drug relapse. Now, she’s admitted to turning back to illegal substances this year, but the bandages are due to contracting septicaemia from a botched mouth procedure.
Danniella told This Morning’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield of her tough year on Tuesday’s programme (15th November), stemming from her frequent hospital visits. Before (and during) the show, she’d visit the doctors’ to help fix her teeth, and has even removed her top teeth in place of veneers – but complications have made recovery difficult.
‘I spiralled into a depression after Big Brother. I had the best time in there. I came out so excited to get back on my feet.
‘This happened and I haven’t been able to work. This has spiralled me into a depression, and I split from my boyfriend too.
Danniella, 43, dated toyboy lover George Arnold for nearly a year, before their split in October. She continued her tale of heartbreak, saying: ‘I was so depressed all the time with everything. And one day my boyfriend was just gone. I was like, “I didn’t even know you at all then.”
‘I did relapse. I thought my whole world was over when he left.’
The troubled actress then revealed that she didn’t only turn back to drugs, but tried to end her life to escape her depression: ‘I tried to overdose a lot when George walked out…When you relapse and take drugs, you don’t see that.
‘All you see is selfishness and a way out. You carry on taking drugs until you get to that point when you’re so low and on such a comedown that you’re just like “I just want to kill myself.” It’s the most selfish horrible thing.’
Luckily, Danniella’s openness was received well by many viewers at home, who took to Twitter to express their empathy: one user wrote ‘I’ve got so much respect for Danniella Westbrook she tells it as it is, no hiding behind her addiction, holds her hands up! Honest.’
