Doctor Who has scored a hat-trick of TV awards for the second year in a row.

The series picked up Most Popular Programme at the National Television Awards while David Tennant and Billie Piper won Most Popular Actor and Actress.

The pair, who wore co-ordinating black outfits, couldn’t keep the grins off their faces as they celebrated at the ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall last night.

Other winners included Top Gear which scooped Most Popular Factual Programme. The triumph came weeks after co-presenter Richard Hammond nearly died in a high-speed crash.

Host Jeremy Clarkson said Richard was thrilled with the news and added: ‘I got a text from Hamster earlier. He said break a leg – in fact I hope he breaks both legs. He’s completely delighted.’

Other winners included:

Big Brother for Most Popular Reality Programme

EastEnder’s Charlie Clements for Most Popular Newcomer

The X-Factor for Most Popular Entertainment Programme
