Sam Taylor-Johnson certainly prepared well for directing Fifty Shades Of Grey

Making the Fifty Shades of Grey film sounds like it’s been quite a labour of love for director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

The film-maker has worked hard to keep the movie adaptation true to the bestselling novel by E L James, which has garnered millions of fans all over the world. Even the most diehard of Fifty Shades devotees probably hasn’t read it as many times as Sam has.

‘I have read it over and over,’ says Sam, 47. ‘More than any other book ever.

‘I had it on set with me the whole time. I have it in the edit room now.’

Wow, that’s dedication! Sam was always keen to put her own stamp on the project too, so she’s had to find a balance.

‘I want to protect my vision and that’s the hardest thing,’ she explains. ‘There are so many voices.

‘With any idea, 12 people have to approve it. And then you make it and 12 people want to adjust it. And you have to try and keep them all at bay.

‘To keep your voice clear. To keep the shape of your art. You think, “You hired me because I’m a creative artist with a vision. Don’t try and knock it out of me”.’

Ever since she was offered the job back in June 2013, Sam knew she was in for quite a ride given the book’s popularity.

‘The moment I stepped out of the meeting, I stepped on to one of those bullet trains,’ the director admits.

‘The doors closed and I couldn’t get off. The speed, the velocity, was unbelievable. I need to get off and breathe and think about something else.’

Nearly two years later the world is getting ready to see the highly-anticipated movie, which stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson as lovers Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

Fifty Shades is due for release on Thursday 13 February but perfectionist Sam thinks she’ll probably still be editing it right up until it comes out.

‘I’m literally going out of my mind,’ she tells Red Magazine.

‘I have seen this film over a thousand times and I’m now in a blancmange. But the nuances within – the tiniest shift, look, blink of an eye – can make all the difference and flip it into the wrong territory. It’s like walking a knife edge.’

With such a dedicated director, we think Fifty Shades Of Grey is in very safe hands – and we can’t wait to see it.
