The family have special ways of coping seven years on from Jade's death
But the dad-of-two has found ways to help his boys cope with their grief during the holidays, starting with a visit to Jade’s grave in the morning.
‘Christmas is the one day of the year when it’s most obvious someone’s missing. It had to become less about the presents,’ says Jeff, 37.
‘I take them to the cemetery first thing in the morning. Then we have dealt with this, we go home and can enjoy the day.’
The ritual involves Bobby, 13, and Freddie, 12, taking something they’ve made as well as a card and flowers, and it seems to have helped them to enjoy Christmas without any feelings of guilt.
‘They have paid respect to their mum and they don’t feel guilty about enjoying the day at home,’ Jeff explains.
Jeff – who dated Big Brother star Jade for two years from 2002 – admits that coping with the festive season wasn’t easy in the first few years after Jade died aged 27 from cervical cancer.
In an attempt to make up for things he bought them lots of toys, only to find that it didn’t help.
‘They have everything they could every ask for, yet they’re still sitting there upset and arguing,’ he tells the Daily Record. ‘Because they’re angry and frustrated.’
Fortunately it sounds like the boys are doing well these days and Jeff thinks that his decision to bring them up out of the public eye has contributed to this.
‘The first thing I did eight years ago was get a privacy ban. That meant there could be no photos of them in any publication, so they could have as normal a childhood as I could give them,’ he explains.
‘They had the space they needed to grieve as well as they could. As a result they’re very normal kids.’
Now Jeff has eased this a little by letting Bobby and Freddie use social media as they start to think about the future.
The presenter and life coach also shares the occasional photo of his sons but prefers to keep things as private as possible.
‘We have lovely experiences and I want to share them,’ he says. ‘But I don’t want to be throwing everything out there.’
Here’s hoping that Jeff and the boys have a lovely Christmas this year.
