'There are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world'
Jim Carrey has fired back with an emotional statement after he was hit with a lawsuit alleging that he illegally supplied the drugs that killed his girlfriend Cathriona White, calling them ‘evil’ and saying: ‘I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.’
The Hollywood funnyman’s 30-year-old lover tragically died after overdosing on a powerful concoction of Ambien, Propranolol and Percocet back in September 2015. Her death was ruled a suicide and a note was found addressed to Jim, who was one of the pallbearers at her funeral.
But in documents filed on Monday by Cathriona’s estranged husband, Mark Burton, it was claimed that all three bottles of pills were labelled with the name Arthur King, allegedly Jim’s pseudonym.
The files also allege that, on learning of Cat’s death, the Dumb and Dumber star sent a ‘bogus’ text message pretending to have lost the drugs and insinuating that she had taken them in an effort to cover his tracks.
Jim, 54, has now fired back, releasing a powerful statement via his lawyer saying he would ‘defend his honour’.
‘What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world.
‘I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.’
He added: ‘Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control. I really hope someday soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.’
Following the lawsuit being lodged, Burton’s lawyer Michael Avenatti said: “We will be calling on the Los Angeles DA to open an investigation into Mr Carrey’s role in the death of Ms White. We look forward to the evidence and facts supporting the allegations in the case coming to light.”
At the time of Cat’s death, Jim released a statement saying: ‘I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona.
‘She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.’
The couple first started dating in 2012 after meeting on a film set, splitting on several occasions before Cat’s untimely death.
