The Spice Girl’s ten-year-marriage is coming to an explosive end
After announcing that she was filing for a divorce from husband Stephen Belafonte in March, Mel B has now been granted a restraining order from him, as well as primary custody of their five-year-old daughter Madison.
A sworn order from a judge was signed on Monday (3rd April), meaning that Stephen is temporarily restricted from coming into contact with Mel, following her declaration that he was physically and emotionally abusive during the course of their relationship – to the extent that she alleges that she attempted suicide to escape his treatment.
Spice Girls star Mel – full name Melanie Brown – makes a number of shocking claims in official court documents, namely that Stephen was physically abusive and threatened to release sex tapes so that she ‘would never work again in the entertainment industry.’
In the papers, obtained by MailOnline, Mel claims that her decision to end the marriage comes after a number of previous attempts to leave the relationship:
‘I have tried to leave the Respondent [Stephen Belafonte] many times. Every time I tried, the Respondent threatened me with violence and threatened to destroy my life in every way.
‘He said he would destroy my career and take my kids from me. He threatened to release sexually explicit videotapes claiming I would never again work in the entertainment industry.’
According to Melanie, 43, instances of physical violence from Stephen would often occur after public events; it’s claimed that he punched her in July 2012 after an appearance on Australia’s X Factor, and again days later after her performance with the Spice Girls the London 2012 Olympics.
In addition, while filming The X Factor in December 2014, Mel claims to have overdosed on aspirin in an attempt to escape their relationship – but when she tried to call emergency services, Stephen allegedly locked her in a bathroom and told her: ‘Die b*tch.’
Stephen has denied claims made by his estranged wife and admitted to feeling ‘distraught’ at the situation when asked by TMZ photographers on April 4th:
‘You know what my comment to that is, because that is the mother of my children? I’m really distraught in my brain at how this is going to affect our children…and the depths that she’s gone to…
‘That’s it. I’m shocked at those allegations. We’ll have our day in court.’
