Singer says pressure of fame got to her
Nelly Furtado had a breakdown when she first became a household name.
The singer struggled to cope following the success of debut single I’m Like A Bird in 2000.
‘Fame took me by surprise and I ended up having a breakdown,’ says Nelly, 30. ‘It was too much too soon.
‘After two years of intense touring and partying I’d spend hours alone in my LA home, just staring at the floor.
‘I felt like a fraud, believing that people liked me for my image and not my music.’
Nelly admits she was an awkward and paranoid child.
‘I’ve always been obsessive-compulsive,’ she tells the Mail On Sunday.
‘As a kid I had the whole don’t-step-on-the-pavement-cracks thing going on.’
