Take a look at the original New Kids on the Block of 1984
After Sunday’s Superbowl made us remember the epic haltime performance in 1991 from one of our fave boybands of all time, it got us thinking – what on earth have New Kids On The Block been up to?
In 1984 five boys were assembled by producer Maurice Starr. The band’s original name was Nynuk and consisted of brothers Jordan Knight, 14, and Jonathan Knight, 16, plus Joey McIntyre, 12, Mark Wahlberg‘s brother Donnie Wahlberg, 15, and Danny Wood, 15.
The fivesome went on to reach the peak of their success in the late 1980s and early 1990s and shifted more than 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time. hear that One Direction?!
However following an incident in 1992 when concert-goers tried to stampede the stage, resulting in the death of a fan, NKOTB cancelled all their live engagements for the rest of that year and retired into private life.
Almost two years later, the band went back to the studio to record another album with a more mature sound. However Face The Music only debuted at no. 37 in the Billboard 200 chart.
NKOTB went on a tour to support the album. The boys soon discovered that ‘nothing lasts forever’ and unlike when they were selling out arenas in the glory days, they only got to play smaller venues on this tour, such as clubs and theatres.
While the tour was going on, bandmate Jonathan Knight‘s panic attacks and anxiety worsened and he decided to leave the group. The band then cancelled the rest of the tour and shortly after that NKOTB split up in 1994.
Jordan did launch his own solo career in 1999 though.
But all was not lost for the group, they secretly reunited in 2007 and recorded a new CD, before doing live gigs in 2008.
In 2011 the group joined the Backstreet Boys for their comeback shows and in 2014 they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Go NKOTB!
