Is this the most perfect casting ever!?
In what must be the best casting move ever, Emily Blunt has been revealed as the new Mary Poppins.
The Devil Wears Prada actress will star as the world’s most famous nanny (sorry, Supernanny) in new film Mary Poppins Returns, Walt Disney Studios announced on Monday.
British star Emily was said to be the producers’ first choice for the sequel to the classic 1964 original, which will be set in 1930s London and feature a grown-up Michael Banks and his three kids getting help from Poppins and new character Jack in the aftermath of a tragedy.
And we reckon Emily’s a great choice! With her porcelain skin, oh-so-proper accent and knack for delivering a witty line, we can’t wait to see her as Ms. Poppins.
But if you’re worried about the new film ruining the first one for you, don’t worry – director Rob Marshall reckons it’s in safe hands.
He told Vulture: ‘This is an extension. I’m a huge fan of the original, and I’m a very good friend of Julie Andrews, and I hold it in such awe. There is all this new material – it was the Harry Potter of its time – and they were never turned into anything further than that adventure.’
The original film featured Julie Andrews in the titular role, with living legend Dick Van Dyke playing her chimney-sweeping sidekick Burt.
Filming on the new instalment will have to wait however, as Emily is currently pregnant with her second child – although her husband, John Krasinski, recently revealed that the new arrival is due ‘soon-ish’.
We imagine that as soon as baby number two has dropped, Emily will be polishing up on her finger clicking, umbrella holding and, most important of all, her pronunciation of ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.
