Orange Is The New Black star Laura Prepon opens up about her dangerous battle to stay thin

It’s understandable that being in the public eye will come with a pressure to always look good, and so it’s obviously no surprise that celebrities will try to stay trim and looking their best.

However mission look-your-best-at-all-times shouldn’t ever be dangerous, and unfortunately lot of celebrity diets are. Orange Is The New Black star Laura Prepon, who plays inmate Alex Vause, has opened up about the extreme measures she underwent to achieve her slim figure.

‘I’ve always done crazy crash diets,’ Laura explained. ‘I’ve ruined my metabolism that way. I did the HCG diet- you’re injected with a hormone thats extracted from the urine of pregnant women’.

Promised to completely ‘reset your metabolism’ by speeding it up and breaking down the body’s stored fat,  the HCG diet is a daily 500 calorie intake restriction accompanied with the daily injection of the hormone HCG. The hormone is found naturally in the body during pregnancy and is extracted from urine for this process. That’s right… urine.

Although the diet promises to allow the body to ‘lose as much as a pound a day without feeling hungry or weak’, the 500-calorie-a-day means it is impossible to meet all the body’s nutritional needs on such a small number. Our expert and personal trainer Ollie Frost says ‘Leaving aside injecting yourself with hormones, 500 calories is far too little food to be consuming on a daily basis’.

And in fact it seems the entire diet is a fad, as there is actually no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in combating weight loss. In fact, being on such a low intake of calories a day will not only slow your metabolism as your body could go into starvation mode, the exact opposite of the expected outcome of the diet. Any weight lost through the diet is most likely to be due to the dietary requirements and not the hormone injections.

Last year Women’s Health reported that ‘HCG injections have been associated with headaches, blood clots, leg cramps, temporary hair thinning, constipation, and breast tenderness’ so not only are they unnecessary but also potentially dangerous.

We’re glad you’ve put down the injections Laura!
