Michael Jackson's daughter has had a turbulent time since her father's death

Since Michael Jackson‘s death in 2009, his daughter Paris Jackson has had a lot to deal with, and very publicly.

However, it looks as if times are much brighter for her now, as she’s opened up about the steps she’s taken to put the past behind her – by covering her self harm scars with some elaborate tattoos.

Taking to her Instagram account on Tuesday evening, 18-year-old Paris showed off some intricate inkings on her arms in a very serene picture. A lengthy and emotional caption written to her 542,000 followers explains that her history of self-hatred has now been covered with something much more positive – artwork that has helped to hide a dark past.

‘today i can look at my inner forearms and see art that has meaning for me, i don’t see a dark past anymore,’ Paris began.

‘my scars and past of self-hatred have been covered by loving marks, creativity, ingenuity.. and depth. sure i will always carry my past with me, but i see ink as a way of changing for the better, always improving.’

The teenager, who is a talented visual artist, ended her message by sending out an encouraging message to others in difficult positions:

the craftsmanship of tattoos will always be a controversy. some people like them, some people absolutely hate them. i appreciate art, i always have. especially when that art means something to me. today i can look at my inner forearms and see art that has meaning for me, i don't see a dark past anymore. my scars and past of self-hatred have been covered by loving marks, creativity, ingenuity.. and depth. sure i will always carry my past with me, but i see ink as a way of changing for the better, always improving. they represent strength for me. i look back at my old self and then i look in the mirror, and i see a fighter looking back at me. i'll always keep fighting, and encouraging others to stay strong. we all go through hell every now and then but it makes us the warriors of love we were meant to be. so to anyone struggling, it gets better. you're not alone.

Fans have poured in messages of gratitude and congratulations: ‘You are amazing’ says one, while another writes: ‘Your tattoos are beautiful do not let anyone tell you otherwise’. Seeing how much they mean to her, it’s hard to disagree!

The teen revealed in February that she’d been dealing with alcohol addiction by attending Alcoholics Anonymous. In 2013, she was hospitalised after an apparent attempted suicide – thankfully, she recovered, and it looks as if she’s got a bright and positive future ahead.

We’re so happy to see Paris doing better!
