The singer talks wedding plans and give us some sterling beauty tips
It’s hardly possible, but Pixie Lott is even more gorgeous in person than she is in photos, dammit! And when Now meets her on a sunny summer’s morning at a central London hotel, she’s also absolutely lovely. She’s wearing a suit jacket with a nipped-in waist (she has a tiny, tiny waist!) with a pair of silver leather trousers, which she admits might not be totally weather appropriate. Well,it is 24 degrees outside…
Defying the heat, Pixie, 26, kicks off her heels during our interview. Barefoot, relaxed and confident, she talks us through her new range of nails and lashes with KISS. She’s also radiant and clearly very happy and self-assured. Maybe that has something to do with her recent engagement to model fiancé Oliver Cheshire, 28. Well, we can’t blame her there…
Congrats on your engagement. Your ring is amazing!
Thank you [Pixie smiles]!
Are you conscious of your hands now that everyone’s looking at your ring?
Yeah, definitely. That’s why I like to have lovely nails! I’ve got sparkly silver nails today, to match my ring.
How much have you planned for the big day?
I haven’t planned anything at all – I need to get into that. I haven’t had a chance. But it’s so exciting.
What kind of bridal look are you thinking of?
I want something classic. I want to look back in 20 years and still be happy with it. Nothing too trendy. I don’t want to be like: ‘What was I thinking?’ So no bright pink hair! It has to stand the test of time.
Are you worried about your make-up smudging?
Yeah! I will probably cry. I didn’t think I was going to get emotional when Oliver proposed to me, but I did – I was in tears. That’s why you have to have an amazing make-up artist with you on the big day. I think I’ll go for something soft. Something elegant and classy.
Do you know when the wedding’s going to be?
We don’t know just yet. We need to decide which venue we’re going to have, then we can book it. But we’re thinking next July or September.
You’ve still got time to plan, then! Do you have a designer in mind for the dress?
I love Dolce & Gabbana. I wear it all the time, so that would be amazing.
What beauty product would you take to a desert island?
If it was actually on a desert island, then it’d be really hot, so I think it has to be an SPF. When I was younger I didn’t really think about using SPF, but now that I’m getting a bit older I’m really starting to think about it. I want to take care of my skin. I have a Chanel primer with SPF in and I use that every day, and my foundation has SPF in it too. I still tan through it, but it’s all about getting a healthy glow. When you have a bit of colour your make-up always looks way better, too.
Does Oliver like you bare-faced or more made-up?
He likes me more natural, but I like to mix it up and have fun. For a show I do massive eyes. It’s a show! When I perform I can’t wear lipstick as I smudge it all. I’m all about the eyes.
What do you think about celebs retouching their Instagram photos?
It happens a lot and I’ve definitely done it before. But I think it’s good not to do too much retouching. I know it happens all the time and it’s great for professional shoots, but you can tell when it’s overdone. You can tell when the skin is so smooth and the whites of the eyes are so white. I think it looks obvious.
Do you think it’s misleading for fans – will they be striving for something that’s unachievable?
I think people are more aware these days. As long as people are aware that the selfie was taken 500 times before they found the perfect one. Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a rule where you could only take a selfie once… that would change Instagram, wouldn’t it?
What’s your favourite bit of your face?
I guess I like my eyes. They’re the window to your soul. I always focus on my eyes when I do make-up. You can tell a lot about a person’s personality when you look at their eyes.
Do you have any insecurities?
I have my bad days – everyone does. Sometimes my skin isn’t perfect or my hair is everywhere and frizzy. That happens all the time. You’ve got to make the most of what you have. Beauty has a lot to do with that.
One of my best friends is going through a really hard time in her life at the moment and one piece of advice I gave her was to make sure that every morning – even if she’s just at home chilling – she showers, does her hair and make-up and puts on clothes that she feels good in. It makes you feel so much better. If you stop doing that, you wallow and spiral.
What’s your top beauty secret?
I think cotton buds are the best eyeshadow blender – better than any brush. If I’m in a rush, I smudge brown round my eyes with a cotton bud. It makes them look bigger.
Tell us about your range of nails and lashes with KISS…
I really like the ImPRESS press-on nails. I’m wearing two different looks mixed together today. They don’t damage your nails and last up to a week, plus they’re really strong. And you can mix and match to create your own look. They’re easy to put on and never chip.
The lashes are great, too – there are different looks for day and night. I love false lashes and I can tell the difference if I’m not wearing them. They make your eyes pop and you just look so much more awake.
You’re blonde right now with a pink tinge. How do you do it?
I have my own hair paint range. We have lots of different colours and I like to experiment. I had my hair a neon fluorescent colour recently and it’s still got a bit of a tint left. I love it when it starts to wash out – the pastel stages are the most fun.
Will you dye it any more crazy colours soon?
Never say never… Yeah, I probably will! Festival season is great – you can really experiment then.
Have you had any fashion faux pas you still cringe about?
Oh my God, yeah. [She gets her phone out and starts showing us photos on her Timehop]. There’s me with curly hair and a straight fringe back when I was at school. That is awful! I do not like that look. I have naturally curly hair which is great, but a straight fringe with curls is never acceptable!
