Just over a month after Cilla Black’s death, Sheridan Smith scoops another gong for her portrayal of her
Sadly Cilla herself passed away less than 12 months after the series was shown, having suffered a stroke following a fall at her home in Spain on 1 August, and so it’s added an extra poignancy to the biopic.
Sheridan, 34, spoke of the emotions surrounding this last night when she picked up the Best Actress award for her role as Cilla at the TV Choice Awards in London and movingly paid tribute to the late star.
‘Obviously, it’s tinged with sadness,’ she said as she collected her prize on stage.
‘It’s an absolute honour and privilege to play such an amazing lady. Thank you, Cilla.’
Sheridan’s kind words and her success at the ceremony went down well with many fans who Tweeted their best wishes after hearing that she’d won.
‘congratulations! Very well deserved #win,’ one wrote on Twitter, whilst another commented: ‘well done Sheridan. You played a superb Cilla. x’
The actress herself hasn’t spoken about her latest accolade on social media yet but it’s clear that she holds the role of Cilla close to her heart.
Following the entertainer’s shock death last month Sheridan posted an emotional post to pay tribute to her, writing: ‘I’m absolutely devastated to hear the news about Cilla.
‘She was the most remarkable woman, a true legend. She was so kind and helpful to me, it was a privilege to play her.
‘My condolences go out to her family and all who loved her. She will be truly missed. X’
It’s not the first time that Sheridan has won an award for her portrayal of Cilla. Earlier this year – before Cilla’s death – she scooped the Best Drama Performance prize for her role in the drama charting Cilla’s rise from typist to superstar.
