The sensation from North Weezy has spoken out on something serious
Honey G has been fighting to prove herself as a legitimate rapper from the moment she burst onto the scene in her X Factor auditions earlier this year.
Though she’s served as much of the entertainment (and comic) value of the series so far, the controversial contestant has now revealed some truths about her history that are far from a joking matter – a struggle with drug addiction.
Honey G – real name Anna Georgette Gilford – has admitted to having had a problem with drugs, particularly marijuana, in the past in a recent interview. And shockingly, she claims it developed after being sexually assaulted at while studying at university.
‘I have struggled with addiction. I have nothing to hide. I did do some class A drugs like cocaine and I did pills,’ she told The Sun in a frank conversation.
‘I did a magic mushroom that I will never do again — that was probably one of the worst experiences.’
Though there’s not a correlation between drug addiction and being a ‘genuine rap artist’, 36-year-old Honey presumably hopes that owning up to her struggles might help people to see the real her.
‘The thing about me is there is actually a story behind me and my life. It’s not like, “Hi I’ve just turned up on X Factor”.
‘I’ve been a musician my entire life and I’ve been through real experiences. I’m totally real, hardcore and I have experienced things that are real.’
Elsewhere, Honey clarifies that although she has tried them before, Class A drugs such as ‘pills and cocaine’ are no longer in her life – but she’s ‘always’ struggled with an addiction to weed, turning to it in times of difficulty.
‘There was a summer where I was going through a bit of a hard time and I ended up hanging out with people and, basically, we spent the whole time smoking weed.
‘I ended up writing a song about the fact I spent that whole summer smoking pot. It isn’t a lie — basically it is actually true.’
However, upon release of this information, some were speculating about what this means for Honey’s future on the show. But X Factor bosses are confident that she has stayed clean since being on the show, with spokesman Rick Behari saying: ‘We’ve spoken to Honey and she’s assured us she has not taken drugs while being on the show.’
