The star has suffered 'crippling anxiety' around performing
After months of build-up and excitement, Zayn Malik ended up cancelling his performance at Capital’s Summertime Ball, much to the disappointment of thousands of fans.
However, the singer took to his social media accounts directly after to explain why – and he’s revealed that a battle with anxiety caused him to miss the show.
Minutes after Zayn was scheduled to go on stage, staff at the summer event were forced to announce that he would not be appearing after all due to illness. Devastated fans were reported to have burst into tears and file out of the venue.
Yet in a typed message posted after the news broke, Zayn bravely revealed that the ‘worst anxiety of his career’ had forced him to pull out of the performance in front of 90,000 at Wembley Stadium.
‘To all those people who have been waiting to see me perform at the Capital Summertime Ball today…
‘I flew into the UK last night to appear in my home country in front of my family, friends, and most importantly my UK fans,’ he wrote.
‘Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me.
‘…with the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.
‘I cannot apologise enough but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me, I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today.’
Finally, he concluded by appealing to all those who suffer with the condition and hoping that those who don’t could find some empathy:
‘I know those who suffer anxiety will understand and I hope those who don’t can empathise with my situation.’
Despite the initial devastation of the crowd, and fans elsewhere who had hoped for some new performance footage, a lot of the reaction was on Zayn’s side – with Philip Schofield being a name to voice his ‘respect’ for the 23-year-old:
We congratulate Zayn on being unafraid to open up – and wish him all the best!
