Discover the roles that stars came oh-so close to scoring, including the actress that's just revealed she auditioned to play Rachel in Friends

We think we can all agree that Jennifer Aniston was the perfect choice to play Rachel Green in Friends. If her knack of delivering a joke just-so and her killer chemistry with Ross (AKA David Schwimmer) wasn’t enough to convince you, then surely THAT haircut decides it once and for all.

But it all could have been very different if a certain actress had been successful in her bid to play the now-iconic show’s most spoilt yet stylish character…

30 Rock star Jane Krakowski has revealed she originally auditioned for the role of Rachel, but confessed to not getting very far.

Speaking on the red carpet at last night’s Emmy Awards (check out all the gossip and photos here!), Jane told E! News host Giuliana Rancic: ‘I, like almost every actor in the world, auditioned for Friends. I wish I had gotten that one.’

She added: ‘I actually auditioned for Rachel and didn’t go very far.’

Still, it all worked out OK in the end – whilst Jennifer claimed Rachel as her own and went on to become one of the highest paid TV stars ever, Jane won a starring role on another hit 90s TV show: Ally McBeal.

But Jane’s not the only actor to have missed out on a career-defining role. Oh no…

For example, did you know that Christina Applegate (you know, the one who played Rachel’s sister Amy in Friends) was originally offered the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde? The role was eventually played by Reese Witherspoon (who, by the by, played Rachel’s other sister, Jill!).

And Sarah Michelle Gellar – not Alicia Silverstone – was the first choice to play Cher Horowitz in classic 90s film Clueless. As if!
