The stars we've lost this year
2013 was a year that sadly brought many tragic celebrity deaths.
On New Year’s Day the American singer Patti Page passed away aged 85 and in the same month journalist Christopher Martin-Jenkins, actress Sophiya Haque and film director Michael Winner all died.
Celebrity deaths in February included singers Cecil Womack, Reg Presley and Mindy McCready.
There were some famous actors lost in March 2013, with the passing of Frank Thornton and Harry Potter star Richard Griffiths.
Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s death hit the headlines the following month when she lost her life after a stroke at the age of 87.
Many untimely celebrity deaths made the news in May – Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly tragically died aged just 34 and US guitarist Jeff Hanneman, 49, passed away from liver failure.
The Archers’ Arnold Peters and Dad’s Army star Bill Pertwee were amongst the stars that lost their lives in the same month.
News of novelist Iain Banks’ death came in June, just two months after revealing he’d been diagnosed with terminal gallbladder cancer, while actor James Gandolfini suffered a fatal heart attack.
In July Bernie Nolan lost her three-year fight with cancer aged 52 and EastEnders stars Anna Wing and Paul Bhattacharjee both passed.
One of the most shocking celebrity deaths of the year was the loss of 31-year-old Glee star Cory Monteith, who died following a heroin and alcohol overdose.
Comic Mel Smith, 60, passed away after a heart attack later in July.
In the coming months there were more celebrity deaths, including broadcaster David Frost, actor Nigel Davenport and singer Lou Reed.
On 30 November, Hollywood heartthrob Paul Walker was killed after being involved in a car crash at the age of 40 and the passing of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela, 95, caused sadness around the world in December.
