Could our favourite pastime be causing us to gain the pounds?
We all know that eating too much junk food and never working out is destined to make us gain weight. BUT, there’s a new fat trap in town and it’s not what you’re thinking.
It is in fact, social media. Yup, our end-of-the-night, first-thing-in-the-morning obsession. Scrap that, it’s an all-day thing really. If you’re anything like us, scanning facebook/twitter/instagram feeds is essential!
So the fact that it could be making you fat, is actually pretty upsetting. But why?
Nutritionist Cassandra Burns has revealed that people who spend a load of time on social media, are less likely to be active.
She adds: ‘Online connections, even for those who have a lot of online ‘friends’, are much less satisfying and fulfilling than real human contact. This could increase the tendency to comfort eat, to boost levels of ‘feel-good’ chemicals such as serotonin that are lacking as a consequence.’
What’s more, a study has found that if we are friends with someone who becomes obese, it raises our chances of being obese too as what we see on our screens influences what we perceive as normal.
Cassandra also recommends that take regular breaks from our screens, spending less time on social media.
‘Making sure that we spend time with friends in the real world is essential – don’t neglect your real relationships with others in favour of your online connections. When we’re more fulfilled, we’re less likely to comfort eat,’ she explains.
There’s also a few other sneaky things that could be causing us to pack on the pounds including eating food in front of the TV, not getting enough sleep and rushing through meals.
Skipping protein is also a fat trap.
Cassandra reveals: ‘Including protein in your meal helps slow down digestion, leaving you feeling more satisfied and fuller for longer. This, in turn, can help with weight loss, as you’re less likely to have as many calories.’
