Now’s Lucy cried, laughed and raged at Caitlyn Jenner's show, I Am Cait
After announcing her decision to undergo a transition from a man to a woman, Caitlyn Jenner has made mammoth headlines worldwide.
Formerly Bruce Jenner, Olympic athelete, Caitlyn first spoke about her transition in an interview with Diane Sawyer earlier this year and was greatly supported by her family including ex wife Kris Jenner, daughters Kylie and Kendall and step daughters Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian.
On Wednesday, I headed down to the UK press screening of Caitlyn’s much anticipated new show, I Am Cait, which premiers in the UK on August 2 on E!
I won’t lie, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I follow the Kardashian clan like a hawk. I mean, prowling their Instagram pages on a daily basis, stalking their twitters and fawning over their pics, so I was pretty up to date with Caitlyn’s life.
Despite this, I Am Cait still took me by surprise. I smiled, I laughed, I cried- basically it triggered every possible emotion. In fact I was even angry when Caitlyn revealed that the suicide rate in the transgender community was nine times higher than in the straight community.
In the episode, Caitlyn even touches on a time that she wanted to take her own life.
‘I have been in my home with a gun and said, ‘let’s end this right here’,’ reveals the 65-year-old former athlete.
In the show we see the real Caitlyn and seriously -WOW.
She. Is. stunning!
Immaculate nails, sleek hair and beautifully applied make-up. It’s obvious that Bruce should have been Caitlyn a while back.
In fact, Caitlyn’s mum Esther, who meets her new daughter for the first time, even discusses a day when she took Bruce to the store as a child ‘and he refused to wear the clothes’ she picked out for him.
‘He’s a very good-looking woman. It’s going to take a lot of getting used to,’ adds Esther, who struggles to contain her tears as she speaks to Caitlyn, one-on-one.
Sister Pam adds to this, revealing that a young Bruce confided in her over 30 years ago about his feelings.
I Am Cait also offers plenty of humour. When Kim Kardashian and hubby Kanye West meet Caitlyn for the first time, a straight-faced Kanye expresses his admiration for Caitlyn whilst a pregnant Kim raids Caitlyn’s new wardrobe and even picks out a black Tom Ford dress that mum Kris Jenner already owns.
That could be awkward….
I Am Cait doesn’t just offer an insight into Caitlyn’s life – it raises awareness of the issues faced by transgender people. Whilst Caitlyn has been surrounded by positivity throughout her transition, many people do not experience the same support.
‘It’s not this way for everybody. So many people struggle,’ admits Caitlyn, who even visits the family of a 14-year-old boy who took his life after receiving abuse over his gender transition. It’s certainly moving and extremely eye-opening.
I for one cannot understand how people can be so unaccepting but it’s incredibly touching to witness Caitlyn tell her story. I defy anyone to watch this and not feel moved.
I am Cait, Sunday 2nd August at 9pm on E!
