Foxy fivesome Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh, Sarah Harding and Nadine Coyle are back
It’s almost Girls Aloud‘s 10th birthday! Woop de woop! *pops party popper*
Which means I watched the foxy fivesome win Popstars: The Rivals a whole decade ago.
When I was just 17…
And was grinding around to what I thought was a proper dirty bassline back then on their first single, Sound Of The Underground.
Jeez, now I feel old… *puts box of party poppers down*
But in all seriousness, 10 years in the music industry is a mega feat for any band.
The girls scored 20 consecutive top 10 hits between 2002 and 2009 and sold 4.3 million singles, including four number ones.
And today they marked their success by announcing a much anticipated 12-date comeback tour, which’ll open in lovely Chezza’s hometown of Newcastle upon Tyne on 21 Feb.
They also confirmed the release of their new single, Something New, on 18 November AND the release of a greatest hits album, Ten.
That’s quite a substantial serving of Girls Aloud.
And while I don’t have the same gasping-for-breath excitement I did when the Spice Girls announced their comeback gig for the Olympic closing ceremony (I dug out my original 90s platforms and zig-a-zigged my ass off to that) – I ruddy love a bit of girl power!
I only hope that with them being a group again, there won’t be any diva dramas, ego wars or backstage bitchiness, as the girls have barely been in the same room since the 2008 BRIT awards.
And while Cheryl’s said in her new autobiography that she never had a problem with Nadine popping off to America, it’s been reported that some of the other girls did – so it’s bound to feel a bit weird.
Not that any of that matters anyway. Because 10 years on, I’m obviously far too cool to still be a Girls Aloud fan.
That’s why I’ve black marker-circled their tour dates on my calendar. And have set a reminder in my phone for 9am next Friday to buy tickets…
LET IT BE ME!
