Now’s Lucy thinks Sarah Harding will add some colour to Coronation Street…as long as it’s not for keeps

Tonight’s the night as former Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding makes her explosive debut appearance on ITV’s Coronation Street.

It’s no big secret – in fact it seems as though corrie lovers have been anticipating Sarah’s arrival on the cobbles for some time now, especially as she’s playing Joni, the secret wife of Tracy Barlow’s ex husband Robert who unexpectedly turned up on the show last week.

Whilst I’ve always loved Ms Harding, I don’t personally see why she was chosen to be on the show. I’m just hoping they don’t make this a permanent thing.

As a HUGE Coronation Street lover (guilty pleasure maybe?), I’ve tuned into the popular soap for over 14 years now and witnessed some incredible storylines.

Richard Hillman’s car-in-the-river, Tracy killing boyfriend Charlie Stubbs with an ornament, Roy Cropper learning to drive…(HA)

All of these have involved popular Weatherfield residents and not already-famous celebs.

I love the fact that Coronation Street has it’s own little family of actors and actresses, much like the other soaps – Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks. The stars on Corrie make the show what it is and it’s great when a new unknown face rocks up- it’s far more realistic.

Everytime I think of Sarah, 33, (obviously she pops in my head a lot…) I just wanna start strutting round my room belting out Sound Of The Underground or some other catchy Girls Aloud tune. When I watch her tonight I don’t think I’ll be able to shake this feeling and see her as a brand new character.

But, I guess, only time will tell!

Speaking about her role in Corrie, which lasts for four episodes, Sarah admitted: ‘My mum’s side of the family are from up North and I’ve been a fan of the show for years. I’m honoured to finally be part of the programme, but so excited and nervous at the same time.’

Sarah’s character Joni is one fiery lady and in Friday night’s episode she finally comes face to face with corrie’s villain, Tracy, who has been wildly flirting with Joni’s hubby Robert.

‘I had to give her a good slap. I play a woman on the edge. She is angry and feisty but hurting,’ revealed Sarah, adding: ‘It is a big institution here. I shot on the cobbles for the first time with Malcolm who plays Norris, trying to bang down Tracy’s door. It’s a massive honour and for me it has been a learning curve. This is one of my favourite soaps so it has been nerve-racking at times.’

Regardless of my doubts, I’m still counting down the hours until Coronation Street tonight!

Catch Sarah on Corrie at 8.30pm on ITV1
