Second female to win in 8 years

Gregg Wallace and John Torode last night crowned Shelina Permalloo the winner of MasterChef.

The 29-year-old, who grew up in Southampton, took the title with a menu of octopus to start, a mutton curry main and a dessert of mango cannelloni filled with lime curd.

She fought off competition from research analyst Andrew Kojima, 32, and plasterer Tom Rennolds, 26, in the final of the 2012 BBC culinary competition.

‘I am completely and utterly overwhelmed,’ says Shelina.

‘I never thought it was going to be me that would win.

‘The guys were so amazing and I just never thought it could happen to me.’

Chef and judge John was hugely impressed by Shelina‘s feel-good Mauritian-inspired food.

‘What Shelina has done throughout this competition is outstanding,’ says chef and judge John, 46.

‘She

is a very special cook with an exceptional talent, who always wears a

smile and cooks with care to assault the senses and bring sunshine to a

plate.’
