The '70s pop idol to take up role as Eddie Moon

Veteran popstar David Essex has been snapped up to play Alfie Moon‘s uncle Eddie in EastEnders.

The singer and actor – a 70s heartthrob with chart hits including Rock On and Hold Me Close – was set to star in the soap in 2006 but had to drop out at the last minute.

‘Being an EastEnder myself, I’m really excited to be joining the Square,’ says David, 63.

Eddie Moon is a great character.

‘I can’t wait to get to grips with the role and work with such a fantastic cast.

‘I’m really pleased that I’ve been able to make filming work around my tour dates this time.’

Eddie Moon – a real charmer – will be turning up in Albert Square with his kids, including son Michael – who, unbeknownst to Alfie, is the father of Kat‘s son Tommy.

David is a unique talent with a legion of fans,’ executive producer Bryan Kirkwood tells the Mirror.

‘He will bring warmth and charisma to the role of Eddie.

‘His arrival, alongside the return of son Michael, brings a new generation of the Moon family to Walford.’
