Peppa reaches a milestone age

Peppa Pig is celebrating her 10th birthday today.

The animated kids’ show – which is broadcast on Channel 5 and Nick Jr – has become super-popular since it was first aired in 2004 and has generated over £200m in UK retail sales.

But ‘cheeky and slightly bossy’ Peppa was originally thought up by creators Neville Astley and Mark Baker and producer Phil Davies over a few drinks in the pub.

Neville and Mark decided to create a character who had a distinctive sound – but it took a while before they came up with the dress-clad pink pig.

‘The snort came first and surprisingly it took another few days before she became a pig,’ Neville tells Metro.

‘Initially, we were thinking of a more unique hog-like character that maybe slept in the bushes. But once we realised she had to be a pig then the muddy puddles quickly followed.’

Peppa – who they reckon children relate to because she’s a ‘typical four-year-old’ – is now known for her love of mucky water and one of her phrases is: ‘If you jump in muddy puddles, you must wear your boots!’

The cute creature is a big hit with plenty of celeb’s kids, with Coleen Rooney wrapping her son Klay‘s first birthday presents in Peppa Pig paper last week.

The 28-year-old WAG isn’t the only one whose offspring have tuned in.

‘Me and little mills watching Peppa Pig before work,’ Peter Andre, 41, captioned a super-sweet shot of him and his baby daughter Amelia on Tuesday.

Mum-of-one Frankie Sandford, 25, Tweeted in November: ‘Lovely visit from @MarkPickardTM and family… They left 15 mins

ago. I’m still watching peppa pig!! Must change the channel!’
