Kaiser Chiefs singer had another career

Ricky Wilson admits that he used to skive school – but as a teacher, not a pupil.

The Voice coach worked in the education sector for a year but soon found that it wasn’t what he’d hoped it would be.

‘I wasn’t very excited about being a teacher,’ says Ricky, 36.

‘On the first day I thought I’d change those kids’ lives but by the afternoon I thought: “Oh sh*t, this is just paperwork.”

‘I lost my enthusiasm very quickly.’

Ricky disliked the job so much that he’d skip work to take his music on the road, leaving his students to make excuses for his absence.

‘At the end I was sneaking off to go on tour and the kids – they were 18 – would cover for me,’ the Kaiser Chiefs frontman tells Metro.

‘I’d be on tour with The Ordinary Boys and if anyone asked where I was, they’d say I was in the art cupboard.’

Watch Ricky in the final of The Voice on Saturday 5 April at 7pm on BBC One.
