We’re not even 24 hours into the new series of Celebrity Big Brother, but the show is already caught up in controversy.
Viewers were left outraged by homophobic comments made by contestant Winston McKenzie during Tuesday night’s launch show.
During a video introducing the former UKIP member, Winston said: ‘I’d cope with a homosexual in the house. I guess I’ll just have to stand with my back against a brick wall all the time.’
Now CBB could face an investigation by Ofcom after the TV regulators received complaints following the broadcast of the comments.
An Ofcom spokesperson confirmed to the Mirror: ‘We’ve received 165 complaints about Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 5.
‘We will assess these complaints before deciding whether to investigate or not.’
Meanwhile, Rylan Clark – who hosts spin-off show Celebrity Big Brother’s Bit On The Side – has responded to the comments in the BEST way, confessing he is now looking forward to grilling Winston on his exit from the house.
Speaking on This Morning, Rylan said: ‘I can’t wait to speak to Winston. I’ve had a little wall made so when he comes out I’ll say, ‘Winston, I am a homosexual, I don’t know if you know that. There is a wall, if you feel you need to stand up against it.”
When asked if he was offended by the remarks, he said: ‘Do you know what, with the profile VTs I get that you want to be a little controversial, but to say something like that, if you look at homophobia, it’s on the same level as racism.’
He added: ‘If someone said something like that about a black person or a white person, there would have been an uproar.’
