Ben wants to get back in contact with his father Mick
The 29-year-old is hoping to rebuild a relationship with his estranged father Mick, who split from his mother Rosanna when he was just four.
‘I’d like to make peace with my dad,’ says Ben.
‘At the end of the day, I’m doing this for my family, especially my mum.’
After his parents ended things, Rosanna, 51, brought up Ben and his older brother Alex, 31, single-handedly in Croydon. She worked three jobs at a time to make ends meet.
Ben has previously opened up about how difficult the break-up was and how he ended up losing contact with Mick over time.
‘It was a very messy split. For a while after it happened I didn’t see my dad at all,’ revealed Ben.
‘Then we were supposed to see him every other Sunday. Then it just fizzled out. He just wouldn’t turn up.’
Despite the fact that he hasn’t seen Ben for so long, Mick quietly supported him throughout his time on The X Factor and now bitterly regrets walking away from his two sons.
‘The toughest thing for Ben was not having me around. If there was a problem at school, I wasn’t there. Even now, it hurts me just thinking about it,’ Mick tells the Daily Mirror.
‘I wish I could have spent more time with them. I was a truck driver and it was very hard for me to take time off.
‘The only time I hear his voice is when I go and see him at The X Factor or call up the show to vote for him.’
Ben – who beat 26-year-old Fleur East in a nail-biting final last night – has spoken about how he struggled to deal with his father’s absence as a teen.
‘As I got older, I couldn’t handle it and used to drink a lot. I was 14 years old and just necking a bottle of vodka a day until I was sick and paralytic,’ he recently said.
But now Ben’s a huge success with his debut single – a cover of One Republic’s Something I Need – tipped to reach Christmas No 1, Mick insists he isn’t interested in his bank balance.
‘It will be his mum who the money goes to,’ he says.
‘She will be top of his list and I don’t blame him.’
