Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe discusses his struggles with booze, his 'incredibly funny and smart' girlfriend and what it was like getting his kit off on stage in his latest interview
When you’re chatting to Playboy, you can pretty much guarantee that booze, girls and nakedness will be top of the ‘things to talk about’ list.
Daniel discusses his previous struggles with alcohol in the interview, with the former child star – who is now sober after previously confessing to drinking heavily between the ages of 18 and 20 – admitting that booze was the easiest way to deal with feeling self-conscious as he struggled with his post-Potter fame.
Daniel recalled: ‘Anytime I’d go out to dance, camera phones would come out. That would make me very self-conscious, and what’s the easiest way to escape being self-conscious? Alcohol is a quick way of doing that. So it was related in that way.’
And it sounds as though he wants a word with the camera phone inventor, as he added: ‘A few years ago there was a TV ad that showed a lot of inventors, including a guy who invented the camera phone. He was smiling smugly into the camera, and I was just like, F**k you. What have you wrought? [laughs] Camera phones are definitely not my favourite.’
But, when asked to elaborate on his previous description of himself as an ‘annoying, loud, inappropriate, messy drunk,’ Daniel shut down.
‘No, no, no. I’ve given way too much,’ the 26-year-old star said. ‘It becomes painful to watch your personal issues that you’ve tried to be sincere about get turned into fodder for TV gossip shows.
‘I was forthright about it, as you said, but once you start talking about this, that’s all you talk about. I can say lots of well-meaning stuff—why it happened and how I stopped—for three hours, and the headline would be DRUNK ON THE SET OF HARRY POTTER. So I don’t talk about it as much now.’
Elsewhere in the interview, Daniel – who is now sober – spoke about his ‘incredibly funny and smart’ girlfriend Erin Darke, who he met on the set of their 2013 film Kill Your Darlings.
Dan said: ‘That’s a wonderful record of us flirting for the first time. There’s no acting going on—not from my end, anyway.
‘There’s a moment when she makes me laugh, and I’m laughing as me and not as my character. She was incredibly funny and smart. I knew I was in trouble.’
And, this being Playboy, talk also turned to Daniel’s nakedness during his stint on stage in Equus back in 2007.
Dan revealed: ‘I was sh*t-scared and 17 when I did Equus, which is the age when you’re most self-conscious. And I was very aware that a certain percentage of that audience was coming to look at my d**k every night.
‘Looking back, that was mental. I have a lot of respect for myself for having the balls to do it, so to speak.’
