Dionne Bromfield opens up about Amy Winehouse for the first time

Dionne Bromfield remembers godmother Amy Winehouse not as a troubled alcoholic but as a caring and inspirational woman.

Amy mentored Dionne, 15, as she started her music career and, according to the teenager, was on great form before her death last month.

‘She was loving, she was family-orientated, she loved instruments,’ says Dionne.

‘She played guitar all the time, she taught me how to play guitar and she was really into family.

‘She loved cooking, loved singing, she was just a really, really sweet person.

‘She was like a mother figure to me.’

Dionne was about to go on stage when she heard 27-year-old Amy had died on 23 July, but admits she hoped it was just another hoax.

‘Someone was doing my hair and everyone was kind of, do you know when people are sniffing and about to cry and you could just tell?’ she tells Scott Mills on Radio 1.

‘The whole atmosphere went from being happy to everyone just quiet, so I thought, “OK, something’s going on”, and I got someone’s iPad and looked on Google.

‘Then I said, “It’s true, isn’t it?”‘
