Kylie sings her own version of Need You Tonight
Just when we thought Kylie‘s Kiss Me Once Tour set couldn’t get any better – after an old school set of I Should Be So Lucky and Hand On Your Heart, complete with Barbie and Ken dancers, giant cartoon love hearts and Kylie in a glitter bath (yep, you heard right) – the pop princess went on to melt a thousand audience hearts by performing her own version of Michael Hutchence‘s Need You Tonight.
Kitted out in a leather mac, high heels and cap, Kylie stripped away the backing dancers and sang a sexy version of the 80s hit, with a black and white projection of moving escalators on the big screen behind. Half way through, she removed her coat to reveal a black, sparkly leotard. And despite the fact that it was more sultry than sob-ey, we did actually shed a tear.
Opening up about the sexy tribute, Kylie said: ‘Of course [Michael would like the cover], otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it. It just struck me that would be a great song to do – it’s just such a strong vibe to perform that song. You shouldn’t really do anything to it. Just let it be and sing it really simply. I love the staging and that. It’s very still and sexy. I like to have that little tribute to him.’
Michael, the lead singer and founding member of Australian rock band INXS, was found dead in his hotel room in 1997, aged just 32. The New South Wales Coroner reported his death to be the result of suicide.
Hutchence dated Kylie for two years in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but the pair split when Michael met Danish supermodel Helena Christensen and dumped Kylie over the phone. Nonetheless, Kylie‘s feelings for Michael never went away.
‘A guy with that much charisma, it doesn’t just switch off, you don’t just forget about that person,’ Kylie said. ‘I don’t know what it was like for other women in his life, but my love for him remains.’
Kylie, we can’t think of a better way for you to pay tribute.
