As he returns in hit US drama Mistresses, former Hollyoaks star Ricky Whittle reveals all to Now

Ricky Whittle has a rather impressive post-interview plan throwing himself out of an aeroplane 10,000 feet above LA. And he’s even plotting to put the willies up two pals who are joining him for their first ever skydive. ‘They’re absolutely crapping themselves right now,’ says Ricky, 33, flashing a perfect ice-white Hollywood smile. ‘I’m going to forward them YouTube videos of skydives gone wrong because that¹s the way I am. That’s British humour for you.’

Aptly, Ricky’s having the last laugh in his career too. Four years after his character Calvin Valentine was written out of Hollyoaks, he’s cracked a US career after moving there in 2011. As well as a lead role in post-apocalyptic drama The 100, he’s back this month in another series of ABC’s scandal-packed show Mistresses, playing former FBI agent Daniel Zamora.

And Ricky’s real life relationships have been juicy too. Last April, he began a six-month romance with Demi Moore’s daughter Rumer Willis, 26 and prior to that he reportedly dated Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr, 30.

More recently he¹s been spotted with a mystery blonde named Sara. So what’s happening in his love life and what’s in store for him Stateside?

Ricky reveals all…

You had some pretty hot scenes with your Mistresses co-star Rochelle Aytes, who plays April. Was the sexual chemistry between you genuine?

If you look at TV and films throughout the ages there has to be some sort of chemical reaction. It doesn¹t necessarily have to be positive. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing actually hated each other and that created one of the best screen chemistries of all time! Fortunately Rochelle’s an incredible actress and we were able to take it to completely different levels.

Have girlfriends ever got jealous when they¹ve seen you getting physically close to a co-star?

It’s a tough industry and a lot of actors tend to be single because it’s hard for partners to accept that you’re working with beautiful people. I’ve had partners in the past say: ‘That’s the look you give me,’ or: ‘You have those mannerisms when you’re with me what’s real and what’s not?’ As an actor you have to take real-life emotions and bring them to your characters, so if they get jealous then I’m obviously doing something right!

Your character Daniel is pretty secretive. Are you similar?

I guess I’m very, very similar. I’m no angel I’m not perfect, so there’s that little bit of mystique about me. I rarely talk about my private life. I’m very open about myself but with regard to my family or partners I like to keep myself to myself.

So are you single right now?

I’m single and focused on work and making myself better than I was yesterday. I’m happy with life. I’m just trying to be a good person and, hopefully, when the right person comes along…

Would you ever hit Tinder to meet the right girl?

I would not go on Tinder for the right girl! I rarely go to clubs or bars so it’s actually very hard for me to meet people in our industry. I end up dating people who I already know, whether they’re in my gym, yoga class or my social life. It’s hard to meet someone new. I can’t think of the last time I went on a first date with someone I didn’t know.

Why don’t you go to bars?

A lot of people come to America and get soaked up in the party life because every day is like a holiday in California. You can happily sit by the pool and get sucked up by the house parties. But before you know it, you’re spending thousands, you’ve not booked anything, you’re getting out
of shape and you’re returning home with your tail between your legs.

But you’re looking pretty good!

I’m probably in the best shape I’ve ever been in my life. I think that’s down to eating healthier and keeping more in shape because there’s always that guy who’s up and coming who wants to usurp you. There are so many people out here who are hungry and it’s about who wants it more.

What would be your dream movie role?

Action films James Bond, Marvel. I’m a very athletic person so I love using my physicality. But I also love working with women, so romantic comedies and drama.

Did you get action-hero advice from Rumer’s dad Bruce Willis?

I’ve received advice from various actors across my career… and I’m grateful for it all!

Mistresses returns to TLC at 9pm on 12 August
