The former X Factor star made the revelation during an interview with Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard
Rylan Clark-Neal has hinted he is struggling with depression during a live TV chat.
The former X Factor star revealed his apparent mental health battle during an interview with Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard as he hosted Wednesday’s instalment of This Morning, where he is covering as Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby take a break.
Rylan confessed to going through ‘something similar’ to Bev – Corrie’s Liz McDonald – as she discussed the recent breakdown that led to her taking a break from the ITV soap.
‘Without going into too much detail, I’m going through something very similar at the moment and listening to your story is just so inspiring,’ Rylan said.
He continued: ‘About what you’ve said, what you’ve been through, and especially Jon, your husband – he went to night classes for two years to really understand depression – so he’s your rock and can be there. It’s unreal.’
Beverley responded to Rylan’s comments: ‘I’m not surprised that something like that affects you because the one thing you must remember is it’s the curse of the strong.
‘We are people pleasers and we are perfectionists, and demand so much of ourselves that we put ourselves under pressure.’
She added: ‘You’re a very creative person, that comes across, and with that, sometimes, we are almost born with a gift and a curse at the same time.’
Speaking about her own mental health battle Bev said: ‘The problem is, once you go right down into that black hole, it’s very hard to get yourself out of it. And I knew I was going there.
‘I lost confidence totally, and to be honest, to play [my character] Liz you’ve got to be very brave to put those clothes on I have to tell you! And I put on this PVC skirt and thought, ‘Oh goodness me.’
‘That day I just felt idiotic and that I’m not up to doing this anymore, and my confidence had just totally gone.’
However, fans of the show will be pleased to learn that Liz and her trademark glam wardrobe will be back soon enough, with the star revealing: ‘I’m back on the 1st May – in a PVC skirt I’m sure!’
She added: ‘Even though I’ve just had a dip I’m on the up now.’
We’re glad to hear it, Bev – and we hope that Rylan can soon say the same.
