#WeAreHereForYouSelena trends on Twitter following Selena Gomez’s shock confession about her illness
Selena Gomez has shocked her fans after revealing that she’s undergone chemotherapy in a battle against the autoimmune disease lupus.
The 23-year-old singer admits in a new interview with Billboard magazine that she was secretly having the treatment when she took some time out following the cancellation of her Australian and Asian tour in late 2013.
‘I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy,’ says Selena.
‘That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke.’
At the time there was much speculation about why Selena was keeping a low profile, with some rumours even suggesting she might have some sort of addiction issue, and needless to say this was very upsetting for the former Disney star.
‘I wanted so badly to say, “You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes,”’ Selena explains.
‘I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.’
This isn’t the only time that Selena’s been affected by what people have been saying about her. The young star – who’s famed for her past relationship with Justin Bieber – thinks she’s had a particularly rough time at the hands of critics.
‘”I’m so f***ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me,’ she says. ‘I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17.
‘It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story. The hate motivated me [when making new music.’
Selena’s candid revelations have led to a hugely emotional response from her huge fanbase, who refer to themselves as Selenators.
Fans quickly got #WeAreHereForYouSelena trending on Twitter as they sent moving messages of support to their idol…
Even other massive fanbases, including One Direction‘s Directioners and Taylor Swift‘s Swifties, have been getting behind Selena.
Selena’s fans will undoubtedly continue to show their support as the singer makes her return to the music scene with new album Revival, which is set to be released tomorrow.
