Actor had near-death experience in South Africa

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he once came close to death when he was carjacked in South Africa.

Benedict was filming TV series To The Ends Of The Earth in the country when he and two other actors were set upon by a group of six men, who tied them up and drove them into the bush.

After being put in the execution position with a duvet over his head to muffle the sound of shots, the Sherlock star was convinced he was about to die.

Fortunately the group released them in the middle of the night and Benedict admits the fright was a highly emotional experience.

‘I had this realisation that it doesn’t matter how loved you are in your life, you die on your own,’ Benedict, 36, tells Event Magazine.

‘I’ve still got a scar where I was tied up. It was terrifying.

‘The next morning I woke up as a free man with the sun on my face and I cried. I thought I’d never feel its warmth again.’
