As Helen Mirren is announced as the new face of L'Oreal, we put together a gallery of other older women who look better than ever
It’s hard to avoid it: the celebrity world is kiiiiiiinda obsessed with youth.
Everywhere you turn in Hollywood there’s another stunning 18-year-old, glowing with youth, and co-starring in a rom-com alongside a (male) actor 25 years older than her.
It seems scarily like once you hit the ripe old age of 30, you’re pretty much consigned to the ‘sassy aunt’ type roles.
So we did a massive Now office cheer with the announcement this week that 69-year-old Dame Helen Mirren has just become the face of beauty brand L’Oréal. The actress follows in the footsteps of the (younger) likes of Blake Lively, Kirsten Dunst and Cheryl Cole. And we think Helen looks easily as good as any of them.
And if you were in any doubt of Helen‘s awesomeness, she’s also insisted to her new bosses that her images can’t be re-touched. Presumably because when you look this great, you don’t even need Photoshop (full disclosure, we used Photoshop today – but only to crop the images – we SWEAR that was all we did. OK, we also put a frog’s head on our brother’s face and sent it to him).
Brilliant Helen – who also happens to be smart, funny and talented let’s not forget – said of her new role, ‘I am truly delighted to become an ambassador and join such an impressive group of high-achievers. I am not gorgeous, I never was, but I was always OK-looking and I’m keen to stay that way. I hope I can inspire other women towards greater confidence by making the most of their natural good looks.’
We realise we’re just embarrassing ourselves at this point but OMG HELEN YOU ARE GORGEOUS DON’T EVEN SAY THAT BABE.
She also talked about ageing gracefully earlier this year, saying, ‘Your 40s are good. Your 50s are great. Your 60s are fab. And 70 is f*cking awesome. I’m not quite there yet, but almost.’
L’Oréal’s general manager Elen Macaskill got as ‘fan girl’ as us when describing the company’s new model, calling Helen, ‘Brilliant, irreverent, beautiful, sexy and quintessentially British. She is subtle and alluring, and to women in the arts she’s an inspiration and a tireless supporter of emerging talent.
‘As you can tell I’m a huge fan, and we’re incredibly excited to introduce her as an ambassador for our brand.’
We really couldn’t agree more. So – mainly because we wanted to spend our day picture researching photos of Helen Mirren – we’ve put together a gallery of FABULOUS famous women, including Meryl Streep, Michelle Pfeiffer, Karen Brady, Sharon Osbourne, Demi Moore, Susan Sarandon, Goldie Hawn and Nigella Lawson, who may not be 25 anymore, but still look not just incredible, but actually hotter than ever.
WOO HOO! WOMEN.
