The actor made a return to Hollyoaks recently, but where was he before that?
Back in the day
Vintage Hollyoaks was a treat in the nineties and noughties – remember classic characters like Jambo Bolton and Scott Anderson? But our favourite double act were Max and his mate Sam ‘OB’ O’Brien. The comedy pair were best of pals – until Max (Matt Littler) was killed off in 2008, dying in OB’s arms after a car crash. So what came next for his pal OB, played by Darren Jeffries?
Darren, now 34, was born in Wrexham and was a pupil at Padgate Community High School in Warrington, which Chris Evans and Kerry Katona also attended. If going to school with Kerry isn’t a sign of future stardom, then we don’t know what is.
Darren joined Hollyoaks at the tender age of 15 after taking drama lessons for just three weeks. Together with pal Max, the best mates ruled the show, providing plenty of laughs as we saw the ups and downs of their friendship unfold. Darren left the show six months after Max was killed off in 2007, which he described as ‘emotional’.
After leaving Hollyoaks, Darren stuck with Matt, presenting shows together, like Red Bull Rivals in 2010, as well as hosting the British Soap Awards after-party show on ITV2 in 2013. They also founded a creative agency called Little Jeff Productions. But his true calling beckoned when he made a long overdue return to Hollyoaks at the end of 2016 to track down the Osborne family, who’d vanished from the village.
Back in the fold
Rejoining the soap for two months, Darren said: ‘It’s an absolute pleasure to bring OB back to the Hollyoaks village. I still can’t believe it’s been over eight years since I left the show – it feels like I’ve never been away.’ After filming his final scenes, he tweeted: ‘Hollyoaksters! Thanks for all the kind messages, truly loved being back in the village. Till next time…’ Come back soon, OB…
