We’ve  heard the word superfood bandied around a lot over the past few years. From superfood smoothies, to superfood face masks, everything seems to now contain these magical ingredients that have the connotations of making us walking health gods and goddesses, practically glowing from the inside out. But what really IS a superfood, and are they all they’re cracked up to be… and more importantly, worth the hefty price tag?

What IS a superfood?

Superfoods are often called this because of their high nutrient density, and claims that they contain increased amount of antioxidants and phytonutrients which have been shown to be beneficial to our health. However, there is actually no real definition of what constitutes a superfood, so how can we distinguish between what is actually good for us and what is a fad?

Doctors have never wavered from recommending we eat a wide variety of vegetables and fruit to ensure we are packing in as many nutrients into our diet as possible. Therefore, simply eating a balanced and varied diet rich in veggies, yummy fruits, grains and protein sources such as lean meats and oily fish is going to enrich your body with enough goodness to not spend an arm and a leg on obscure ingredients.

Alice’s verdict:

In moderation, and if your budget allows, these ‘superfoods’ can be great, for example with chia seeds being a source of protein, they can be a great alternative to your morning oats. However, I don’t think they should be the holy grail of all things healthy. Simple eating a balanced and varied diet consisting of mostly whole foods is enough to keep your body healthy, and your purse strings happy!
