One Direction star and girlfriend Sophia Smith witnessed the horror

Liam Payne‘s best mate Andy Samuels has spoken of how the One Direction star rushed to his rescue when a patio fire exploded as he tried to light it.

Andy suffered 20% burns all over his body in the accident that happened on the balcony of Liam’s London pad last month.

He was rushed to hospital and underwent seven skin grafts, though he admits that things could have been much worse had Liam, 20, not acted so quickly.

I can still see Liam trying to put out the flames with his hands,’ says Andy, 21.

I was set completely on fire – terror is the only word fit to describe what I was feeling. The pain and the panic I felt is something no one should have to go through.

I was the one that was injured, but it was a crazy, horrible experience for Liam to witness as well. He was trying to help me but I thought I was going to die.’

Liam and his girlfriend Sophia Smith, 19, helped to ease Andy’s fears after the shock of the accident.

The best thing Liam and Sophia did that night for me was just reassure me and try to keep me calm until the ambulance arrived,’ Andy tells the Mirror.

I was in such a panic. I was also worried I’d burned the building down and they kept talking to me to keep me conscious.’

Liam’s now on tour with 1D in Australia but has been in constant touch with Andy as the T-shirt entrepreneur continues his recovery at home.
