The footballer names Malala Yousafzai this year's Teenager Of Courage
David Beckham has thrilled a 16-year-old victim of terrorism by presenting her with a gong ahead of the Pride Of Britain Awards tonight.
Malala Yousafzai giggled about the footballer’s height and told him: ‘I didn’t know you would be here’ as she accepted her prize.
Malala was named this year’s Teenager Of Courage for continuing her work as an activist despite being shot in the head by the Taliban last year.
The youngster was in a coma for eight days after gunmen attempted to assassinate her.
They’d targeted Malala because of her calls for girls in Pakistan’s Swat Valley – where she’s from – to get equal access to education.
But after being flown to Birmingham for treatment she started school here and has now set up the Malala Fund to help finance education for girls in disadvantaged countries.
In July, she received a standing ovation from the UN in New York and is tipped to be announced as the youngest ever winner of a Nobel Prize later this month.
David, 38, seemed very pleased to give Malala her trophy, which she says will help her to continue her campaign.
‘You’re an amazing young lady whose story has moved millions,’ David told Malala.
‘I’m privileged to present this award to you.’
