Looking like Kate Middleton doesn't come cheap

Kate Middleton may be a fan of high street bargains, but she’s still managed to spend a reported £35,000 on clothes this year.

However, it’s not Kate or husband Prince William picking up the bill – Wills‘ father Prince Charles forks out for the items the Duchess chooses for official engagements.

This is because William‘s £44,000 salary as an RAF search and rescue pilot isn’t enough to cover the expense.

Wills inherited £10 million from his late mother Princess Diana‘s estate on his 30th birthday last week, but that nest egg is considered private.

Prince Charles‘s public work is funded through the Duchy Of Cornwall – a private estate of land and property holdings which netted him £19.7 million last year.

Out of this income, he pays for his own work wardrobe and gives Kate, William, Prince Harry and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall an allowance for the clothes they need for formal occasions.

Kate, 30 – who refuses to accept free designer dresses – has worn a host of stunning garments this year, including a £3,750 lace Temperley gown for the London premiere of War Horse in January and a teal Jenny Packham number worth almost £3,000 at the Olympic Gala Dinner in May.

‘She is looking fabulous,’ couturier Stewart Parvin tells the Daily Star.

‘I understand with the way the economy is at the moment that she feels a need to be seen in high street clothes but I think people also want to see her in things that are slightly more unattainable.’
