The singer found her and Russell's break-up very tough

Katy Perry has admitted that she hid away from the world after splitting from ex-husband Russell Brand in 2011.

The singer, 28 – who’s previously said that she had suicidal thoughts following the break-up – didn’t want to leave her house while dealing with the end of her 14-month marriage.

‘I was in bed for about two weeks. I was pretty f*cked, yes,’ says Katy.

‘It hurt a lot – I got a good knock.’

Katy – who’ll celebrate her birthday on Friday – is now dating musician John Mayer but says she’s aware of ‘the reality that things are not always on cloud nine’.

Writing song By The Grace Of God for new album Prism helped her to channel some of the pain from her and Russell‘s tough separation.

‘The song is very autobiographical. I was down and out, I’d lost hope, all of my confidence had been shattered,’ Katy tells the Sunday Times.

‘Unfortunately, although I had a lot of outward self-identity, I didn’t have the inner kind, I hadn’t built that up.

‘My self-worth was in someone else’s hands, which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered.’
