Cristiano Ronaldo has shared a rare glimpse of his softer side, revealing heartbreaking conessions about his youth and being a father.

Football megastar Cristiano Ronaldo has allowed a very rare insight into his private life, bringing with it a tale of childhood heartbreak and a very admirable stance on his fatherhood.

In a new documentary about the 30-year-old, titled Ronaldo, Cristiano reveals his father sadly suffered a drinking problem throughout his childhood which rendered him ‘drunk nearly every day’ – and eventually lead to him dying of liver disease in 2005.

Speaking of the father he ‘never really got to know’, Cristiano admits ‘If you ask me why my father became an alcoholic I don’t know. Maybe he was frustrated with life….I wanted a different father who could be more present and to see my achievements’.

His brother Hugo admits ‘[Cristiano] could have taken the wrong path, but he took the right path and I’m happy’. In fact, this misfortunate relationship with his late father has spurred the footballer on to be the best father possible to his 5-year-old son, Cristiano Jr- ‘Some children never get to know their parents, neither mother nor father. Having a father is enough’.

Cristiano Jr’s mother is unconfirmed by Cristiano- and purposefully so. Cristiano explains, ‘people speculate I was with this girl or another, or there was a surrogate mother. I have never told anyone and never will’, before adding ‘when Cristiano [Jr] is grown up I will tell him what I did, what I felt, everything that went through my mind’.

And despite Cristiano’s phenomenal success in the sport, he is not in any rush to push his son into playing football – insisting he is ‘going to be whatever he wants’. However Cristiano does add that he ‘always dreamed of having a son to be my successor’, revealing he encourages his son to ‘play like me, to score goals’.
